Hospital Admission Checklist: Everything You Should Carry for a Stress-Free Experience
Getting a family member admitted to a hospital is already stressful enough. The worry, the rush, the phone calls—the last thing you need is realizing you've forgotten something important. A document the billing desk needs, a medicine the doctor asked about, or a basic comfort item that would have made the stay much easier.
At Maharana Pratap Hospital, Indore, we see families arrive every day—some prepared, some completely overwhelmed. Over the years, we've noticed that families who come prepared move through the admission process faster, feel calmer, and can focus on what truly matters: the recovery of their loved one.
We've created this practical checklist to help you prepare for both planned and emergency hospital admissions. Save it, share it, and keep it handy.
Before We Begin: Two Types of Hospital Admissions
Hospital admissions generally fall into two categories:
Planned Admissions include scheduled surgeries, elective procedures, or pre-planned treatments. Since you have time to prepare, pack carefully and arrive with everything you need.
Emergency Admissions happen due to accidents, sudden illness, or urgent medical situations. In these cases, getting medical attention comes first. Documents and other belongings can be arranged by family members afterward.
This checklist is useful for both situations.
Part 1: Essential Documents – Don't Leave Home Without These
Documents are among the most commonly forgotten—and most important—items during hospital admission. Keep digital copies on your phone as a backup.
- Government Photo ID: Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID, or Passport.
- Previous Medical Records: Discharge summaries, operation notes, blood reports, X-rays, MRI/CT scans, ultrasound reports, ECG reports, and specialist consultation records.
- Current Prescription & Medication List: Include all medicines, dosage, frequency, supplements, and herbal medications.
- Insurance Documents: Health insurance card, policy details, Ayushman Bharat card (if applicable), company health card, previous claim documents, and insurer helpline number.
- Emergency Contact Details: Carry written contact numbers of at least two family members.
Part 2: Personal Items for the Patient
Comfort plays an important role during recovery. Pack these essentials:
Clothing & Comfort
- 2–3 sets of loose, comfortable cotton clothes.
- Light sweater or shawl.
- Comfortable non-slip slippers.
- Undergarments as required.
Personal Hygiene Essentials
- Toothbrush and toothpaste.
- Soap or body wash.
- Small towel or face towel.
- Comb or hairbrush.
- Hand sanitizer and wet wipes.
- Lip balm.
For Female Patients
- Personal hygiene products.
- Hair ties or clips.
Sleep & Rest Comfort
- Personal pillow (optional).
- Earplugs for light sleepers.
- Eye mask for daytime rest.
Part 3: Medications
Carry all current medications in their original packaging with labels clearly visible. Inform the medical team about every medicine the patient is taking, especially:
- Blood pressure medicines.
- Diabetes medicines or insulin.
- Blood thinners.
- Thyroid medication.
- Heart medicines.
- Any medication for chronic illnesses.
Also inform the hospital about any allergies to medicines, food, or other substances.
Part 4: Electronics & Entertainment
Longer hospital stays become much easier when patients stay connected and occupied.
- Mobile phone.
- Phone charger.
- Power bank.
- Headphones or earphones.
- Tablet or laptop (if needed).
- Books or magazines.
- Notebook and pen.
Part 5: Essentials for the Family Member or Attendant
The accompanying family member should also be prepared for long hours at the hospital.
- Comfortable clothing.
- Personal hygiene items.
- Water bottle and snacks.
- Phone charger and power bank.
- Cash and payment cards.
- Light jacket or shawl.
Part 6: Financial Preparation
Financial planning helps avoid unnecessary stress during admission.
- Understand the hospital's payment policies.
- Carry both cash and cards.
- Inform the billing desk immediately if using insurance.
- Keep a small emergency fund.
Questions to ask during admission:
- What is the estimated treatment cost?
- What does insurance cover?
- How much deposit is required?
- How and when will final billing be completed?
Part 7: Small Things People Often Forget
- Written list of questions for the doctor.
- Photos of previous medical reports stored on your phone.
- Spare glasses or contact lens supplies.
- Written dietary preferences or allergies.
- Hospital contact numbers saved on your phone.
What NOT to Bring
- Expensive jewellery or valuables.
- Large amounts of cash.
- Strong-smelling food items.
- Too many bags or unnecessary luggage.
- Too many visitors at one time.
